The Option of Adoption

In reading so many articles in the past few days on the horrific situation in Haiti my heart has been cheered to see a massive push for the adoption of Haitian orphans. Orphans who were orphans before the earthquake, and sadly, children who are now orphans because of the earthquake.  It’s an incredible demonstration of one of the noblest things a person can do and that is to care for the defenseless and the weak.

And it’s got me thinking about adoption and abortion.

Abortion is a humanitarian crisis as well. Millions of children are being violently killed each year because they are supposedly unwanted, but are they really unwanted?

My personal belief is that there are as many families, good families, seeking to adopt, as there are women seeking to abort. I think that is a position that could be validated in the evangelical church alone.

So, as long as there is the option of adoption, abortion is all the more revealed to be the grossly inhumane killing act that it has always been. In terms of being a humanitarian question, why kill when one can nurture life? Why take a life when one can nurture it and then give it to someone else who will nurture that life? For women who don’t want their children, adoption is the plain, clear, obvious, humanitarian option.

Right?

More on adoption in the days to come.
