He’s in the news again. Many from his own party hate him and many from the opposition doubt him. After the Ben Nelson stunt in the Senate one can understand why people would be skeptical towards Stupak in the House.
I don’t doubt Bart Stupak’s sincerity but I do think we may be missing something as we cheer him on in his pro-life crusade regarding this legislation.
One, The Stupak-Pitts amendment still allowed taxpayer dollars to cover abortions in the cases of rape and incest and in the case of a pregnancy putting the mother’s life in danger. I personally feel that those categories do not necessitate abortion nor justify it. I believe many pro-lifers feel the same.
Two, Bart Stupak really does want to vote for this healthcare bill. That’s something no one, especially no pro-lifer, should overlook.
We should hope Bart Stupak sticks to his guns and continues to speak a pro-life message. However, we should understand and we should hope he understands the trouble with granting the Fed this kind of industry control and the potential a bill like this has to one day open the flood gates for taxpayer dollars to flow to the abortion industry even if he gets his wish.
There is a serious abortion lobby in the Congress. They haven’t ever set the issue aside nor will they if Bart Stupak manages to stop them this time. One could place a wager that this will only motivate them more. The Hyde Amendment for example, is regularly attacked. The Hyde Amendment prohibits certain federal funds from covering abortions and even the language to it has changed over the years due to the intense debate. Should this bill pass, the pro-life movement should only expect that the abortion funds prohibition would be subject to the same attack and certainly subject to change.
I’ll be praying that this bill fails completely, Stupak amendment or not, and of course, that abortion and the culture of death currently gripping this nation come to an end.
